The following story is just one of the ways Pet Peace of Mind bridges the gap between families and the pets they love.
The Volunteer Coordinator for our hospice partner Community Hospice of NE Florida received a call from a social worker about a patient whose dog needed updated vaccinations. The patient was very attached to his dog, Archer, and Archer was very attached to him. The Pet Peace of Mind team brought Archer to the vet and when they returned, the patient was so happy to get Archer back he came outside to greet them.
About a week later, this patient was in a pet friendly nursing home but not doing well. He was moved to an inpatient center but Archer was left behind at the nursing home. The Pet Peace of Mind team collected Archer and took him to visit the patient since the staff said that all he talked about was his dog. They arrived at 11:00 AM and spent 20 minutes with the patient who was able to open his eyes and pet his dog. The patient died around 4:00 PM that same day. He had been hanging on just so he could say goodbye to Archer.
Archer is a mixed breed senior and was adopted shortly afterwards. His new human had recently lost her senior dog and Archer was there to help her through her loss.
